Mobile Transmission Replacement
For a lot of mobile mechanics, the answer is simple: “Take it to a shop.”
We understand why some mechanics draw that line. A transmission replacement is a big job, and doing one in someone’s driveway isn’t the same as doing one on a lift. But mobile doesn’t have to mean basic.
N&H Repair takes on transmission replacements when we can safely access the vehicle, properly support it, remove and install the transmission, and verify the repair afterward. We’d rather tell you honestly that a job isn’t suitable for mobile service than refuse it simply because it’s a big repair.
If your transmission is slipping, won’t move, won’t go into gear, or has otherwise been diagnosed as needing replacement, we’ll help you figure out what the next step actually looks like.

If you’ve already had the vehicle properly diagnosed, great. We’ll review what was found and work from there. If the diagnosis is questionable, we may recommend our diagnostic service before committing to a replacement.
A transmission is an expensive part to replace. We’d rather spend some time proving the failure than have you spend thousands of dollars replacing a transmission that wasn’t actually the problem.
Depending on the vehicle and symptoms, diagnosis can include:
- Scanning transmission and powertrain control modules
- Reviewing diagnostic trouble codes and live data
- Checking transmission fluid condition and level
- Evaluating shift behavior
- Checking transmission pressures where applicable
- Testing electrical circuits and transmission solenoids
- Inspecting wiring and connectors
- Checking transmission mounts
- Inspecting axles, driveshafts, and other driveline components
- Evaluating torque converter operation
- Performing road tests when the vehicle can safely be driven
- Verifying that the symptoms actually point to internal transmission failure
Sometimes the answer is a transmission.
Sometimes it isn’t.
We want to know which one before you pay for one.
Once we’re confident the transmission needs to be replaced, we’ll determine whether the job is appropriate for mobile service.
That means looking at the vehicle, the transmission, the location, available working space, ground conditions, weather exposure, and what equipment the particular vehicle requires.
If everything checks out, we’ll plan the job around the specific vehicle rather than treating every transmission replacement the same.

That said, we’ll want to verify exactly what you’ve purchased before installation. A transmission that physically bolts into a vehicle isn’t necessarily the correct transmission for that vehicle.
If your transmission has failed, you usually have several options.
Used transmission
A used transmission can be the least expensive option, particularly for an older vehicle.
The downside is obvious: you’re buying a transmission with an unknown history.
A reputable recycler or supplier with a warranty can make this a reasonable option. A random transmission from an unknown source is a different story.
Remanufactured transmission
A remanufactured transmission has generally been disassembled, inspected, and rebuilt according to the remanufacturer’s process.
This can provide a good middle ground between cost and risk, particularly when a good warranty is included.
The quality of remanufactured units can vary considerably between suppliers, so we recommend paying attention to who actually rebuilt the transmission and what the warranty covers, not just the word “remanufactured.”
New transmission
A new transmission is generally the most expensive option, but may make sense for newer vehicles or vehicles where long-term reliability is important.
New doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the right financial decision, though. We’ll help you compare the options against the age, mileage, condition, and value of the vehicle.
The biggest advantage of mobile transmission replacement is pretty simple:
The broken vehicle doesn’t have to go anywhere.
If your transmission has failed and the vehicle can’t move under its own power, getting it to a shop can mean paying for a tow before you’ve even started paying for the repair.
With mobile service, we come to the vehicle.
That can be especially useful when:
- The vehicle won’t move
- The vehicle has no reverse
- The transmission is severely slipping
- The vehicle is stuck at home
- You’re dealing with a work vehicle that can’t easily be taken out of service
- You don’t want to pay for a tow
- The vehicle is sitting somewhere that’s difficult to transport from
- You’ve already purchased a replacement transmission
But mobile service does have limits.
A transmission replacement requires safe working conditions. We need adequate space, suitable ground, safe vehicle support, and enough room to work underneath the vehicle.
If a particular vehicle or location makes the job unsafe, we won’t try to force it.

A Big Job Doesn’t Have to Mean a Shop Visit
Transmission replacement is one of those repairs where people are often surprised to find out that mobile service is even an option.
We’re not going to pretend every transmission replacement belongs in a driveway. Some don’t.
But we’re also not going to automatically refuse the job just because it’s bigger than a brake job.
